Presents
A Doctor in Spite of Himself
By Moliere
Adapted by Aurand Harris
An Outreach Production in Cooperation with Jordan Middle School

Sganarelle,
a shiftless woodcutter, quarrels with his wife, Martine, who vows to
get even with
him. Her chance comes when she meets two
servants
in search of a doctor to cure their master's daughter, and Martine
recommends her husband as a doctor who can perform miracles. The two men
hail Sganarelle
as a great doctor and force him into becoming a doctor in spite of
himself. When Sganarelle is able to unite the master’s daughter with
her own true love, she is miraculously cured -- and Doctor Sganarelle is
richly
rewarded.
This sharpened version of a charming French classic is a fun romp for all!

Here are answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about this
show:
When does it happen?
Auditions are on Dec. 5th & 6th, after-school
in the Cafetorium-Theatre. Callbacks on Dec. 7th.
Performances are Feb. 28, 29, & Mar. 1.
When are rehearsals/performances?
Basically four-five afternoons a week, depending on what
role you’re cast in, from 3:15-5:30, until the show opens. There
will also be work days (optional for cast members) on 2 Saturdays
in February,
and a special rehearsal in the afternoon on the Sunday before opening. Cast
and crew spend more time in rehearsal during the last 2 weeks, and
everyone stays after the final
performance to help strike the set and celebrate at the cast party.
Who can tryout?
Anyone who is a Jordan student! All grades
are welcome, all students are encouraged, all
ethnicities, all types-- whether or not you have ever taken any drama
or ever been
in a show before. This is a smaller cast show than the musical,
however-- so not everyone who auditions will be cast...
Can I just be crew?
Yes! Committed crew people are always needed, including
Stage Manager, Assistant Director, Light crew, Props Masters, Sound
crew, Costume crew, Makeup crew, Set crew, painters, and more.
Even if you’ve never done any backstage work before, come sign up at
one of the audition days and I will contact you. Crew generally
meets once a week until closer to show time. Crew also come as they
can on the three Saturday work days and the one Sunday rehearsal.
Does it cost anything to be in the show?
No fees-- cast members may be asked to purchase something
having to do with costume or prop needs, but that cost is usually
minimal,
and should not keep anyone from getting involved. If you have
any questions about this, come see me.
Do I have to sing or dance?
Not necessarily-- this is a play, but there is some
music and dancing in it-- there's a role for a Choreographer, too.
Other than
her, no one needs to be great at dancing... :-) Everyone will be asked
to sing a simple song, like Row Your Boat.
What if I'm not called back for Friday?
Callbacks are so that the Director and I can hear/see people a little
more to better determine casting. Don't assume that you won't get
a role if you're not called back-- often I
already know who I want for a certain role after Thursday so I
don't need to call them back. So, be sure to check the final cast
list on Sunday on the website.
Do I need to prepare anything for the audition?
No-- just
come wearing comfortable clothing, fill out a form, and join
in the
fun. Don't wear awkward shoes or flip-flops,
and girls don't wear mini-skirts! There will be a list of
characters posted in B-Hall near the Drama Room, and I'll make
some "sides" available in B-3, so check it out...
If I haven’t answered your particular question, feel
free to stop by the Drama Room (B-3) during Brunch or Lunch or after
school to see me.
Or you can call me-- 213-0150-- or e-mail me: jforte@pausd.org
Of course, any production of this size needs lots of
ADULT VOLUNTEERS, too-- Parents of cast and crew are expected to contribute
time and effort to assist the production;
you will be contacted right after auditions to determine in what way
you can help out.
And, if you decide not to be IN the production, put the
performance dates on your calendar and come see it!!
See you at auditions, Jeanie Forte, Drama
Instructor
