Criteria for Grading Clay Shoe Project

The finished project is:

An accurately sized reproduction of a shoe of the student's choice.  The clay shoe will be constructed using clay slab and coil techniques.  The clay shoe will be textured and glazed in a manner to replicate the actual surface texture and finished color of the real shoe.

 

Content: concepts to learn

            Student demonstrates a clear understanding of the use of clay slab and coil construction techniques

            Student demonstrates a clear understanding of the use of a paper pattern/template in the construction of the three-dimensional shoe

 

Craftsmanship: skillful use of materials

            Slabs carefully rolled and parts fitted well together, with adequate use of slip to insure proper joining of parts.

 

Creativity: inventive new ideas, personal expression

            Finished shoe shows attention to detail and variety of textures and surfaces.

 

Commitment: performing to best of ability, showing progress          

            Student is on task at all times and works with focus and concentration

 

Connections: cultural or historical awareness

            Student can identify one artist known for ceramic shoes

            Student can identify the basic working properties and characteristics of clay

 

Critical Thinking: ability to evaluate and critique artwork

            Student is able to articulate what was challenging about the project.  Student is able to articulate strengths and weaknesses in finished work, using the vocabulary of the elements of art.

 

Completion: finish in a timely way

            Student completes work on time – if behind schedule, takes initiative to come in after class hours to complete work.
