Question
#10: Why is a pilot (as in airplane pilot)
called a pilot? |
| THE ANSWER:
There are two answers that could be right:
- the word pilot can be traced back to ancient languages. The
word “pedotes” in Ancient Greece meant
person who steers. It then became the word “pilota” in
Italian, which still meant person who steers, and so
to the English word “pilot” .. one who
steers something.
- The other answer, suggested by Ms Doran when she
asked the question: the first aeronaut to fly
a hot air balloon in 1783 whose first name was Pilatre ..
thus the name pilot.
