DRAMA
AT JORDAN - 2006-2007
6TH
GRADE WHEEL -
A
brief introduction to the fun and challenges of drama, including
some pantomime, improvisation,
short skits, group and solo projects, oral interpretation and
lots of play. Goals
are to give opportunities for creative self-expression and enhance
abilities to speak/present before a group while exposing
the student to basic elements of drama.
DRAMA
1A - 7TH & 8TH GRADES
A
more extended introduction to drama, allowing for more in-depth
exploration of skills
and techniques. Projects may include group and solo pantomimes,
improvisation, oral
history and storytelling, character study, Greek theatre, short
monologues, oral interpretation, mime to music, scene work,
and short plays. Training in make-up, costumes, properties,
and stage management introduces the student to technical aspects
of theatre. There will be one evening's performance
at the end of the semester for
students to present work for family and friends.
DRAMA
1B - 7TH & 8TH GRADES
Advanced
drama study, involving more challenging projects for the dedicated
actor, including mime, improv, short plays,
Shakespeare, monologues, short student-directed projects,
scene work, and a fully produced play. Students receive
training in directing, design, choreography and stage
combat.
We take at least one field trip to see professional theatre,
and have an evening of performance during the semester to present
student work for family and friends, as well as assembly
performances for the school community. Completion of Drama 1A
and 1B combined with a recommendation from Dr. Forte makes a
student eligible to advance to Theatre 2 at Palo Alto H.S.
AFTER-SCHOOL
DRAMA OPPORTUNITIES
This
year there are four chances for students to participate
in after-school
projects: the musical in the Fall, a play in the Winter,
a student-directed Drama Club play in early Spring, and a Children’s
Theatre Outreach play in late Spring.
All three grade levels are
welcome to try-out for any of these productions. We try
to give all auditioners a role in the Musical, but the
Winter Play is more competitive, and usually a smaller
cast show.
Auditions for Guys
and Dolls
are on September 20& 21, and it performs on Nov.
2, 3, & 4. Usually about
75 students and many parents participate in this production,
which
typically sells out all three shows.
Our Winter play this
year is Shakespeare's most beloved comedy, Midsummer
Night's Dream, with
roles for 20-30 students. Auditions will be in DECEMBER on
the 5th & 6th, and rehearsals will
start right away and continue through January; performances
are
on February 8, 9, and 10.
Our Drama Club play is open to all Thespians and apprentices,
and is student-directed. Several plays are currently under
consideration;
all have casts of 10 or so. Auditions are February 13 and 14;
the first read-through will be on the 16th, before the long "ski" week
break. The show performs March 22 & 23, with a possible production
on Saturday the 24th-- the last three years, we've
taken
a short version of our Drama Club play to Channing House
Retirement Community as an outreach. So join the Drama Club
and join the
fun!
In addition,
Palo Alto Children's Theatre will be coming on campus to
cast and rehearse
an Outreach
Play in April and May; they haven't announced
the title yet, but it is frequently a musical that can accommodate
many
performers. Performances
will be at Children's Theatre in May.
Such productions
require the help of many volunteer parents--
