Grading Policy

The student’s grade will be based on various forms of assessment. These include, but are not limited to, homework, tests, quizzes, class work group assignments, class participation, and projects. The grade will be determined as follows:

Homework

Homework may be assigned on weeknights and occasionally on weekends. Each assignment will be worth points based on an average amount of time required for completion. The assignment is written on the flip chart is or is announced during the last five minutes of class so that it can be copied down. Social studies homework should not take more than about 30 minutes of uninterrupted study time for most students unless students wait until a due date to work on a project of study for a test

It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher or two or three classmates to receive missed homework assignments. Late homework will be accepted for a lowered grade unless the student can provide a written excuse from home which explains the delay. No work will be accepted after it is one week overdue. Please contact me with any questions regarding homework, assignments or concerns.

Tests

Tests are designed to illustrate the student’s grasp of the material. Point value is determined by the amount of material covered. A study guide will usually be available so that students know what to study and what is expected of them.

Quizzes

Quizzes will be given periodically within each unit and may be announced or unannounced. They are designed to show understanding of recent material of recent material or to ensure that the student keeps up with readings and assignments.

Projects

Projects will be assigned. The student will be sufficient time in and out of class to research their topic and prepare their information. More information will accompany each project. (A variety of possibilities for projects is presented to the student who chooses the one most appealing to them.)

Class assignments (In-class)

Various in-class assignments are given. These include individual work and group work. Students are expected to contribute when assigned to a group. Group work is graded and all the members of a group have a chance to contribute when assigned to a group. Group work is graded and all the members of a group have a chance to "grade" the contributions of the other members, although the teacher’s grade is the final grade of the student’s efforts.

Class Participation

It is essential that students contribute in a positive fashion to the lessons and discussions taking place. This ensures that the student understands the material being covered and is able to apply it to current events or topics. Participation includes listening and courteous receiving of other’s comments as well as answering and discussing. (Shy children can participate and do not need to feel that they have to speak out although they will be encouraged to do so if they so desire.) Disruptive behavior is also included in this category and may result in a reduced grade.
