In 1994 ten master carvers came to the Stanford community from Papa New Guinea. In a garden on the northern end of the campus they carved poles, standing figures, and slit drums. All the wood they carved was shipped from New Guinea. The sculptures were all made on site providing the Stanford community with a unique experience.
The artist's age ranges from 27 to 73 and they come from two different villages called Kwoma and Latmul.
The artist's names were:
Membor Apokio0m
Teddy Balanago
David Kaipuk
Joseph Kondimbo
Tati Lati
Yarame Mambegowi
Kowspi Marek
Simon Marmos
Maui Sauhambai
David Yamanapi
Gutok Yantaka

All of these artists helped to weaken stereotypes and let us get to know a culture we may never meet again.
