Alexander Calder
was born in 1898 in Lawton Pennsylvania. "Sandy" was
his name to the people who knew him. His family was full of artistic
visions. His father and great grandfather were both sculptors
and his mother was a painter. His sister Peggy who was two years
older than him was very close to him. They would always play
together with their toys and gadgets that Alexander made. Even
at a young age of five Alexander was making "gadgets".
Later on in life he graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. After he left New Jersey he began to study art at the Arts Student League in New York. He created art throughout his life and he married a woman named Louisa. They had two children together and lived in Connecticut and France. During these years he made games, jewelry, sculptures, drawings, paintings and many, many, of his most famous mobiles. He died in 1976 at his home in Connecticut. |
