My Personal Reaction

When I first saw The six Burghers of Calais, I was astounded. I really liked the way Auguste Rodin added emotion to every single character. They all react differently to the same fate. One of them has his hand over his face. Another looks on as calm as a cucumber. They seem so life like because you can easily relate them to your own life. They are also in a very good location because there is a lot of open ground. I think that the best part of the sculptures is the location because there is a lot of open space. I really like the light that flows in between every nook. It makes you feel as if they are real people. The volume and the mass also helps you understand that these people are going to die. The larger they are, the more it makes you feel intimidated. The sculptures are so well done that you can believe that they could walk away at any second. The muscles and the texture really makes them seem real. I think that the best part of the sculptures is the space between the pieces. It also adds movement and gives you a great view as you walk in between them.
