Mark di Suvero is the sculptor and he was born in 1933 in Shanghai, China, where his father was a naval attaché for the Italian government. His family immigrated to San Francisco in 1941, to escape the Japanese invasion of China. di Suvero received his B.A. in philosophy at the University of California at Berkeley in 1956.

di Suvero was inspired to begin to sculpt because of the Greek gods; they used to make sculpture to accent the landscape and background. He often uses many "around the house" things like wood blocks, and industrial metal. He has often made his sculptures by listening to music or poems and interpreting the poems into the sculpture.

In 1960, di Suvero suffered a accident that left him confined to a wheelchair. After namy long months, he finally regained his health. Suprisingly he learned how to sculpt large pieces of metal in a wheel chair! di Suvero was going to live out his dream at any costs. He now plans to continue fufilling his dream until a day he can not physically do it anymore. He has a great passion for art.
