Artist: In 1994 ten New Guinea carvers came from Papua New Guinea
to develop a sculpture garden of New Guinea art on the Stanford
University campus. This was their first trip to the United States.
The artists were from two different cultural groups, the Kwoma
and the Iatmul. The artists were:
Membor Apokiom
Teddy Balangu
David Kaipuk
Joseph Kandimbu
Yati Latai
Yarame Mambegawi
Kowspi Marck
Simon Marek
Navi Saunambui
David Yamanapi
Gutak Yantaka
Jim Manson was the project director. The artists collaborated
with a New Guinea landscape architect, and an American landscape
architect. The artists told stories related to their works using
the two translators from Papua New Guinea. They had Musical performances,
on the last day of their visit as a celebration. They had lectures
providing information on arts and cultures of Papua New Guinea.
More than 20 tree trunks were used. The trees came from Papa
New Guinea. They had guided tours at the site.
