Potato Eaters
By Vincent Van Gough
When I first saw this painting I thought, "What is a potato eater?" Then I realized that the painting was just about a family eating. They could be eating potatoes, but they are eating more than one thing so they are not just eating potatoes. I choose this painting because I like how it is shaded. I think it gives an interesting effect when the whole painting is dark while the small realistic candle in the middle contrasts with that dark. It makes it look like the candle is actually lit because of the brilliant shading. The name of the piece makes you wonder what the people in the painting are doing. It seems like they are doing more than just eating potatoes.
