John Singer Sargent's "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose" was painted in 1885-86, near London. It is very detailed and captures the setting in a beautiful garden when the picture was painted. The color is not very bright but that’s contributes to the harmony of this painting. John Singer Sargent blended all the colors together to create a certain enchantment to the painting. The two girls, the lanterns and the garden all compliment each other. There is a line where the girls are playing with the Chinese lanterns that lead to the path in the garden and out to the flowers. The flowers look real and the lanterns really stand out because they have the feel of a Chinese lantern that has thin paper, pulled over a cylinder of wire. This picture is realistic because it sticks to the true elements of life, but imitates impressionist qualities. We like to be in nature, so this picture felt homey to us because we would love to be in a beautiful garden at night. |
