Chemistry Unit Project Name:

1st decision: do you want to research an element or a molecule?

In your research, you will learn about the structure of that element/molecule, its discovery and history, its properties, and its uses, among other things.

Part 1: Data Collection         Must be completed by: 12/5

You will have some class time (in-class research on 11/18 and 11/25) to start your research. You should use a variety of sources, including books and websites. You might also find some good information in magazines or other sources.

Part 2: Key and Model          Due: Week of 11/18, Day 4

For this part of the project, you will put some of your research together in a key. A key is like a square on the periodic table, only your key will include more information than a square on the periodic table in your binder reminder. Your key can be more creative, however, if you wish. See me for ideas on this.

If you are researching an element, you will make a Bohr model of an atom of your element on paper. If you are researching a molecule, you will draw the structure of your molecule on paper.

Your key and model can be neatly drawn by hand or done on computer. The choice is yours.

Part 3: T-shirt or 3-D Model   Due: Monday, December 2

2nd decision: For this part of the project, you have a choice of designing a t-shirt with all of the required information or making a 3-dimensional model of your element/molecule. No matter what you decide, you will use some of the same information that you used for the key and model in Part 2.

You will also be including some extra information from your research in Part 1. This information can be put on the t-shirt, or on a "price tag" that hangs from the shirt. If you are making a 3-D model, you will make a chart that includes all of the required information.

Part 4: Written Presentation   Due: Week of 12/9, Day 3

3rd decision: You are in the home stretch! You have several choices for how to present the culmination of your project.

If you have other ideas on how to present the information, ask your teacher for approval before getting started.
