In this unit our objective is to complete a large-scale tempera painting in the style of Georgia O'Keefe. We examine O'Keefe's biography and the development of her style over the long history of her career. We begin by practicing contour drawing and developing the discipline of observational drawing. We also examing "framing" and carefully zooming in on a small area of our composition to create a large portrait that moves from the representational to the abstract. In addition, we begin to discuss the Principles of Design, which are the "rules" we use to combine the Elements of Art in our artwork. In this case, we examine the principles of movement and emphasis, how our eye moves around the work of art and how the artist creates a focal point or main area of interest.
