Self-Portrait |
|
This lesson continues our exploration of the self-portrait and begins our exploration of the medium of watercolors. The objective of this project is to create a "snapshot in time" of the artist as a young person. The unique nature of this highly expressive portrait is derived from the use of a single continuous line to create the original "sketch" portrait, which is then enhanced with watercolors. Using small mirrors, students are asked to draw a line portrait of themselves with black markers using a single continuous line without lifting their pen from the paper. Students then practice a number of techniques in watercolor, including salt texture, "wet-on-wet" mixing, opaque washes, dry brush, etc., to enhance the expressive nature of the self-portrait.
