This unit is a beginning study in the process of relief printing. Students create a design that is meant to portray the passage of time in a series of 3 - 5 images. They refine this design and then transfer it carefully to a "safe-carve" block, where it is carved in relief in preparation for the printmaking process. The artist must learn to think in reverse, since the printmaking process creates a reverse image of the design as it appears on paper. The blocks are carefully carved, and then the artists create a series of prints, including an artist's proof, using a variety of colors and experimenting with creating work in series.
