This unit is a beginning study in the process of abstraction. Students study a famous series by artist Roy Lichtenstein entitled "Bull Profile Series," a series of prints in which the artist progressively exaggerates, distorts, and manipulates various elements of art (line, shape, form, color, etc.) until he arrives at a totally abstract image. Students create a series of four drawings that emulate this process, using as a model an object in the art room or an image from a magazine. Then they create a measured grid on their final drawing and enlarge the image to create a painting in acrylic on 18" x 24" canvas.
