Painting a Digital Self-Portrait

This is a multi-stage project that includes the use of technology tools, precision measurement and layout skills, and more advanced skills in the mixing and use of acrylic paints. It is also meant to provide an interesting “snapshot” portrait of the young artist at this stage in his/her life.
Each student starts with a digital picture of him/herself, which is loaded into InClass via the Digital Dropbox. We spend a day or so in the computer lab manipulating the photos in Adobe Photoshop, experimenting with various filters to create different effects. The picture is then printed and the students lay in a 3/8” grid over the entire portrait. They use this grid to enlarge an outline of the portrait on 16” x 20” canvas. They pick and define a monochromatic palette, and paint their portrait in acrylics.
