Acrylic Self-Portrait

This is a multi-stage project that includes the use of technology tools, precision measurement and layout skills, and more advanced skills in the mixing and use of acrylic paints. It is also meant to provide an interesting “snapshot” portrait of the young artist at this stage in his/her life.
Each student starts with a digital picture of him/herself, which is taken in the "PhotoBooth" application on our classroom iMac computers. The picture is filtered using the "Andy Warhol Pop" effect, and the artist chooses the particular color scheme he/she would like to work with. The picture is then printed and the students lay in a 1” grid over the entire portrait. They use this grid to enlarge an outline of the portrait on 18” x 24” canvas. They pick and define their color scheme, and paint their portrait in acrylics.
